Our island was very large so we designed the different heights to reduce the large mass look and also give the cook different heights for different tasks in the kitchen
The large island we designed to be more useful with the different heights and materials. The wood top is a softer, warmer surface for the kids to use when doing their homework but we wanted the granite for the hot pots from the ovens and cooktop.
The simplicity of the custom designed doors plays off the rectangular shapes of the subway tile. We love the wonderful symmetrical balance of this focal point in the kitchen
We custom designed a wider stile and rail door and added the decorative glass opening at the top of the doors to get an interesting play of shapes on each door. The 3 piece crown molding we created from painted simple solid stock

The space left after centering the microwave gave us an opportunity to design slotted spaces for her cookbooks
A closeup of this unusual subway tile shows the suble texture and a larger size than is normally used. And that's a design technique that adds more interest to the kitchen space
